This might be the world’s most bizarre ultramarathon.
Burning Man is…well…you have to go there and experience it to really understand what it is. But simply speaking, it’s a celebration of art and music set in a temporary community based on radical self-expression and self-reliance in the middle of the Black Rock Desert of Nevada. Amid the dusty madness, the fifth Burning Man Ultramarathon (The Black Rock City 50K) took place on Aug. 27 and more than 250 people showed up dressed (or not dressed) to run at 5 a.m. Among them was Ryan Van Duzer, an endurance and adventure junkie from Boulder, Colo., who offers up an inside glimpse and great commentary in this video. Despite his antics and video work, Van Duzer ran strong and finished third in 3:52:58, knocking 15 minutes off his time from a year ago. For more about the race, check out the event’s website.
