Amelia Boone is one of the most decorated obstacle runners in history. She is a three-time champion of the World’s Toughest Mudder, a Spartan Race World Champion and an accomplished ultrarunner. When she isn’t training, Boone works full-time as a corporate lawyer for Apple. Her next race is the 2017 Spartan World Championships on September 29th. You can stream the event live on Facebook at Spartan Live.
Ahead of her race this weekend, Boone shared the five items that power her over obstacles and across miles.
$34.78, amazon.com BeetElite is my go-to before every race or run. The nitrates found in beetroot raise nitric oxide in the blood, improving circulation and enhancing energy efficiency for performance. I'm not a fan of traditional pre-workouts, and this is the best boost I can get, backed by science.
$149.95, rei.com A mobility tool that does some of the work for you! Regular foam rollers don't cut it for me anymore. The vibrations of the Hypersphere one cuts through deeper knots, and can be used on almost any body part. Bonus is that it's small enough to throw in a carry on and travel with, so it comes with me to all my races!
$20, roadrunnersports.com I always have a roll of Rocktape H20 handy for little niggles and injuries that pop up to help provide support and proprioceptive feedback. There are endless applications, and the H20 version holds well through Spartan races when you are in and out of water.
Bizzy Coffee Shots
$25 for 12-pack, amazon.com Many Spartan Races and ultras are in very remote places with really early start times, so you don't always know if there will be a coffee place open. (And yes, I am a pre-run/race coffee drinker.) These little guys are life-savers. You can travel with Bizzy Coffee Shots in carry-ons, and they are also perfect for mid-race caffeine needs in ultras. I'll be using these at the Spartan 24hr Ultra championships in Iceland this December.
$12.79, amazon.com My all-purpose go-to. I can't stand running with chapped lips, and Aquaphor is the only thing that works for me. And while there are plenty of fancy anti-chafing ointments out there, nothing I've found has matched this as a basic. It's perfect to prevent chafing and windburn during long runs and races.
