Browne, Meyerhoff Capture 2009 USA 25K Championships

Although both races were USA Championships, overall titles were taken by Kenyan’s Isaak Kimaiyo (1:15:36) and Genoveva Kigen (1:27:16).

The Men’s race went out fairly slow with a group of 20 men, including half a dozen Americans, together through 5 miles.  As the race passed 11 miles it was a fight between Browne and Ryan Sheehan for the USA title, with three Kenyans leading the race.  Browne would end up catching all but winner Kimaiyo to take second place overall and the USA 25K title in a time of 1:15:56.  Jason Hartman was able to take 4th overall as the 2nd American in 1:16:14 and Fasil Bizuneh rounded out the American podium with his 6th place overall finish of 1:16:21.

The Women’s favorite, 2008 Olympian Magdalena Lewy Boulet, was in contention through 11 miles, but Meyerhoff refused to let her go.  Meyerhoff made her move just passed the 11 mile mark and did her best to close the gap on leader, and eventual winner, Kigen.  Although she would not catch Kigen, Meyerhoff easily distanced herself from the American field to take her first 25K Championship in 1:27:28.  Boulet was able to hold on to the runner-up American spot, and 4th overall, in 1:28:14 followed by Tera Moody who finished 4th overall and took the final podium spot on the American side in 1:28:41.
