If you’ve been following close attention to Shalane Flanagan’s social media lately, you may have noticed her training schedule has picked up this summer. Which had us wondering, “Will the 2017 New York City Marathon women’s champion be heading back to NYC this year?”

This afternoon, The New York Times published an article confirming our suspicions and announced that the 37-year-old would once again be racing to break the tape in Central Park. The Olympian herself retweeted the article out to her 120K followers as retweets and likes began pouring in almost immediately.

Relating the marathon to feeling of dating and being in love, Flanagan told the Times, “When I think about running New York, I get a feeling of ecstasy; my stomach turns. It’s like if you’re dating someone and it goes well and you want more.”

Last year, the Massachusetts runner ended a four-decade drought for American women when she won the New York City Marathon in a time of 2:26:53. Her effort beat out three-time defending champion Mary Keitany of Kenya who came in at 2:27:54.

Five months later, Flanagan’s longtime friend Desiree Linden also made her way across the finish line on Boylston Street to end a 33-year drought for American women at Boston. “My win in New York changed the trajectory for other American women because we’re friends, we’re teammates,” Flanagan told the Times. “And at some point they’ve beaten me too, so I think it was a great motivator. You don’t get to choose your moment, and I think when I had mine, they thought, why shouldn’t I win too?”

Flanagan has yet to comment on her return via her social channels but we’re looking forward to seeing who she’ll be competing against for the title. Only 82 more days to go.
